Forage Testing
September 19, 2024
Forage testing is a valuable tool that helps producers develop cost-effective feeding strategy for their livestock herds. Because variety and growing conditions can significantly influence the nutrient profile of a forage, getting them tested allows for accurate ration formulation and supplementation strategies that will optimize herd performance.
The “Why” of Testing Forages:
- Optimize feed costs by preventing unnecessary supplementation or nutritional deficiencies in the herd
- Maximize herd performance through balanced nutrition
- Ensure optimal economic returns on the sale of forages
The “How” of Testing Forages:
Following these basic practices for collecting forage samples will give you the best results, regardless of forage type:
- Take random samples: To get a realistic view of the forage quality, take at least 10 spot-samples at random so as not to skew the results by only focusing on the best parts of it. Remember: a feed analysis is only as good as the sample provided to the laboratory.
- Take your sample at the optimal time:
- Hay should be sampled once it is baled and stored from multiple locations from the same crop.
- Silage can be sampled at the time of harvest or upon opening the bag.
- Use the right tools for bales: Visit the Co-op Agro Centre and borrow a hay probe for baled hay and bagged forage! The probes collect cores from bales for a more representative sampling.
- Label and seal the bag tightly: Place your sample into a bag labeled with your name, sample date, forage type, and harvest date. Seal the bag tightly, removing any excess air. For silage samples, freezing the samples and sending them frozen is best.
- Send the sample to a certified lab: Bring your samples to the Saskatoon Co-op Agro Centre and they’ll take care of it from there, sending the samples to A&L Laboratories for a thorough analysis.
